Grouse has always herald the beginning of the game bird season. This magnificent bird is very special and makes a show piece for any dinner party. Grouse is one of those must try foods raised in the beautiful, natural, heather moorlands in the Northern part of England. This beautiful part of the British landscape has a stunning purple haze which stretches for miles and where nothing else can be seen. Britain is the only country in the world which has grouse moorland so it is truly British.
A huge amount of conservation is required to rear a grouse and it may come as a surprise to know that grouse moorlands are rarer than rainforest.
Most people would recognise a picture of a grouse bird but very few have tasted one, it is a very healthy meat which is low in cholesterol and high in nutrients and protein and totally delicious.
Did you know you can buy grouse all over the country? It is not just London and the northern counties your local game dealer or butcher will be able to sell you grouse especially if you are able to give them a bit of warning.
At the start of the season it is traditional to have Glorious Twelfth Dinners when the grouse can not be fresher, it arrives at the table the same day
